Gentle Slopes and Horizons of Alto Vez

The route begins at Branda da Aveleira, an idyllic mountain settlement, and crosses the Vez River, still young and tentative, towards Branda do Furado. From there, the path climbs to a viewpoint overlooking the Alto Vez Glacier, before continuing along a narrow trail that bravely resists the encroachment of scrubland, leading to the ruins of another branda: De Real.

Brandas were seasonal satellites of the main villages, sometimes located at considerable distance, and used primarily during the summer months, when life moved up into the mountains.

From this point onward, the trail opens into a clear and well-defined path. Gradually, the landscape — irreproachably beautiful — expands in scale and presence. Forms grow more imposing, shadows more abundant, and the scenery intensifies its quiet magnetism, ultimately captivating both gaze and spirit.

At the summit, upon reaching the Pedrinho geodetic marker, it is the wind that reigns — sharp and relentless. All around, the horizon glows with a sense of timeless brilliance. Granite mountains of the Peneda, the distant, voluptuous hills of Galicia, the steep slopes of the Vez, and the wide valleys of the Mouro and Minho unfold in every direction.

Meanwhile, cattle and horses graze calmly, seemingly accustomed to the severity and austerity of this remarkable place, as if the land’s harshness were already part of their nature.
