Description of Experience
Nature, Biodiversity and Landscape as a Human Gesture
Each trail is walked with attention, revealing a subtle dialogue between earth, water, sky, and the human presence that shapes the landscape.
This time, we invite you on a walking route through a territory where the landscape is the result of centuries of patient interaction between people, land, and water. Classified as a National Monument and part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this village in Alto Minho reveals a way of inhabiting deeply rooted in time.
Along the way, terraced slopes unfold in successive perspectives, forming a cultural geography where nothing is accidental. Each stone wall, terrace, and water channel bears witness to a demanding subsistence agriculture, shaped by repeated gestures, transmitted knowledge, and constant adaptation.
We walk slowly — not to complete an itinerary, but to observe, listen, and understand. Silence, the scale of the mountain, and human presence intertwine, allowing for a sense of unfragmented time, where rhythm softens and attention deepens.
To walk through Sistelo is to engage with the landscape as a human gesture, to listen to the memory of the territory, and to inhabit the presence that spans generations — as TF1 described it, “a well-kept secret that is first revealed from a distance.”
A small-scale cultural experience, combining walking, presence, and sensory reading of the landscape, allowing one to feel the time and human gestures that shaped it.
