Quinta do Hospital, located in Ceivães, Monção, is a property strongly rooted in history, in the middle of which stands a magnificent manor house. Its origins date back to the 12th century. It is said that these lands were donated by the mother of Dom Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, to the Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem (or Order of the Hospitaller).
The Order of the Hospitaller was one of the most prestigious international humanitarian organisations of that time and the Order of Malta is another name by which it is known. It was founded in the 11th century in Palestine during the Crusades. But over the centuries it lost its military character and took on an important humanitarian role in supporting the most destitute.
Quinta do Hospital is owned by Falua, founded in 1994 by well-known winemaker João Portugal Ramos. Falua was acquired in 2017 by Vitas Portugal, a subsidiary of the French Roullier Group.
The wine from the Quinta's vineyards is marketed under the Barão do Hospital brand, in honour of one of the former owners.
A place to discover. Imperatively.
