The River, the Wine and the Memory of the Border (Wine Tourism & Heritage)

This time we challenge you to come and discover Melgaço's territory, not the mountains, which is imposing and magnetic,  but that of the Minho river valley, of the border river. Where  the fishing grounds, stone constructions from the depths of time that reveal fishing techniques as ingenious as they are effective. A treasure in itself.
Today, Melgaço is mainly a land of wine, where the exceptional Alvarinho grape variety reigns supreme. But there are others that are less representative and that you should pay attention to.

However, in this land, in the background, like an invisible film that must not be erased from our memories, there is the legacy and imagery of smuggling, which modelled and structured it  the lives of people in localities like this one. The practice can be revisited in a local museum where it coexists with emigration, another dimension that is no less important in defining what this land was and is. It deserves to be visited.

But in Melgaço, beyond the wine,  there's another rising star, a high quality goat's cheese that combines wonderfully with the expressive Alvarinho.  And whose  A visit to the artisan cheese dairy is highly recommended.
And while we're on the subject of stomachs and gustatory pleasures, our suggestion for a lunch break goes to Quinta de Soalheiro, which is a symbol of excellence in the region. This is because, in our opinion, a programme of this kind calls for a light meal that doesn't hinder the predisposition for movement. And that's what you'll find there, as part of its rich menu of wine tourism experiences. Light, delicious and locally sourced, in a place with a breathtaking view and where you feel like watching the time go by.

And if Soalheiro is a prestigious name linked essentially to wine, it presents  other facets that should not be overlooked.  Like the revitalisation and dignification of an old local habit: the cultivation of aromatic herbs to make infusions or for culinary use.  Before they leave we suggest that they discover the production and that they  try a few varieties accompanied by bread and local honey. In the end, everything  added together, will result in a journey of wide-ranging discovery and pure sensory delight. This is our firm conviction.
