Quintas de Melgaço is a wine appellation founded by Amadeu Abílio Lopes, a successful emigrant to Brazil in the mid-20th century. On his return home, he was imbued with a bold and visionary spirit and challenged other Melgaço natives to embark on a joint endeavour to make the expressive Alvarinho wine available to the people of the world. And so in 1990 the Quintas de Melgaço company was born, uniting hundreds of small and medium-sized producers - well over 500 today.

As an example of the uniqueness of this project, we can mention, among other equally worthy aspects, the donation of 68.8 % of the company's share capital to the municipality of Melgaço made by Amadeu Abílio Lopes in 1996, two years after the start of operations.  In 2014 of particular note is the launch of the QM Homenagem wine to celebrate its distinguished founder.
