The Peneda Gerês Great Route (GR50) is one of the largest walking routes in Portugal. It takes place entirely in mountainous areas and is a route full of sensory attractions, heritage legacies and marks of ancestral rural culture.
The whole route is long (around 190 kilometres) and consists of multiple stages. We aim to help you enjoy a substantial part of the route, the part that comes within our range of action. With or without a guide.
From Ameijoeira, on the border between Portugal and Spain, to Peneda, you can do several stages of less than 10 kilometres. Or combine two of them.
The landscape is extraordinarily beautiful and widely varied. The route is pure balm for the eyes. And for the sense of hearing and smell, such is the profusion of stimuli that nature provides. As you walk one foot after the other, you're guaranteed a feeling of lightness and detachment from the hustle and bustle of the world.
Conversations are counterproductive and should be kept to a minimum. Distraction limits the experience and prevents the senses from tuning in and diluting the surroundings. At the end, we suggest a visit to the surrounding area to better understand rural mountain culture. Today's and yesterday's.
