Days at a slow pace... at your own pace, in pure freedom
Minho River Valley
ENOTURISM
∴ For a substantial part of its course, the River Miño is a frontier river, brimming with history, a troubled history.
∴ On its banks and hillsides, where time flows slowly and nature is exuberant, the ancestral culture of vines and wine takes root, gaining expression in four unique areas.
RIBEIRO
∴ In the province of Pontevedra, just before the river becomes a border, we find the oldest appellation of origin in Galicia: O Ribeiro.
MONÇÃO AND MELGAÇO
∴ We are now at the border of the river, in Monção and Melgaço, two municipalities that continue and complement each other to form a distinct wine region.
∴ A lacy tapestry of small properties, where family tradition, old manor houses and contemporary innovation are perfectly balanced. And where the noble Alvarinho variety shows off all its splendour.
TEA COUNTY
∴ More or less opposite Monção and Melgaço, we find the Condado de Tea, one of the five sub-areas of the Galician Rías Baixas.
THE ROSAL
∴ Beyond Tui, on the way to the Atlantic, on sunny slopes with breathtaking views, the Alvarinho grape variety continues to reign supreme.
HERITAGE & HISTORY
∴ This border region is bursting with history and heritage, beauty and curiosities, so much in so little.
∴ Come and discover it and embark on an extraordinary journey that will allow you to reconstitute one of the fragments of the Iberian and European narrative.
∴ Open a time portal that goes from prehistory to the present, cross the Iron Age, where the unique pre-Roman Castro culture stands out.
∴ Go through the influential period of Romanisation and continue through the long and bellicose medieval period, where the foundation and consolidation of Portugal took root.
∴ And don't forget how important smuggling was in shaping border relations.
SPAS & OUTDOOR BATHS
∴ If Budapest seems to be leading the way, it turns out that the Rio Minho area has the second largest concentration of thermal waters in Europe. A precious spring that the Romans put to good use more than two thousand years ago, calling them the Aurian acquisitions ("golden waters")
∴ The many thermal baths along the banks of the river are there to be enjoyed in their therapeutic aspect or for relaxation and invigoration (after demanding hikes in the wilderness, for example).
∴ A real emotional and sensory delight.
Cultural landscape of SISTELO & VALE DO VEZ
∴ Sistelo is a unique village, for the beauty of its setting and the details of its history.
∴ É both a Cultural Landscape and a National Monument and an open window to discover the lush Vez Valley and the harmonious town of Arcos de Valdevez.
PENEDA GERÊS NATIONAL PARK
∴ The Peneda Gerês National Park is extensive and diverse, but our focus is on Castro Laboreiro, with its ancient history, the originality of its culture and the fabulous granite mountains nearby.
Discovery complement: Southern Galicia
Once here, take the opportunity to discover the south of Galicia, a Spanish region with culture and identity. That's where Vigo is the most populous city. It's very old, vibrant and full of history.
Our suggestion is that you take the train in the morning from Valença and return at the end of the day. The journey takes around 40 minutes.
In the city of Vigo, wander around the historic centre, through the medieval streets, try the tapas or the seafood, without forgetting the delicious Galician wine. Climb up to the Castro fortress, where the city began to be built in the Iron Age, between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. From the top, enjoy a marvellous view over the estuary.
Another absolutely unmissable option is a boat trip to the Cíes Islands, which are part of the Islas Atlánticas National Park. They are a magnificent treasure, a place of exceptional beauty to which the Romans gave the name "island of the gods".

R9|in the cradle of the alvarinho (Wine Tourism & Heritage)
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Visit to the Soalheiro farm (with product tasting)
- Visit to the medieval bridge over the River Moor
- Visit to Quinta do Hospital
- Visit to the historic centre of Monção
OVERVIEW:
∇ We started the day with a short 45-minute stroll along the River Minho in Melgaço, on the fishing trail. Then we head to Quinta de Soalheiro for a tasty programme of visits, tastings and product tastings.
∇ Afterwards, we'll head calmly towards Monção along the old national road lined with vineyards.
∇ We stop more or less halfway along the road at the Moorish Bridge. Here we must take a special look at the small Romanesque bridge on which King João I and "John of Gant", Duke of Lencaster, son of King Edward III of England, met in 1387 to seal the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world.
∇ This resulted in the marriage between King João I and Filipa de Lencastre, the Duke's daughter, a union from which five princes were born, one of whom was Prince Henry the Navigator.
∇ Would there have been discoveries without the stability and security made possible by this alliance? Would Portugal have persisted as an independent kingdom? What would European history have been like without the discovery and control of these valuable trade routes in the centuries that followed?
∇ From Ponte de Mouro we will climb up to the viewpoint of Sra. da Graça, for a panoramic view of the vineyards of Monção and Melgaço.
∇ Then we went back down and stopped further down to visit Quinta do Hospital.
∇ Quinta do Hospital is steeped in history. It seems that the land was donated by Dona Teresa, mother of King Afonso Henriques, to the Order of the Hospital. This donation was part of the invitation for this important medieval warrior and "hospital" order to settle in Condado Portucalense.
∇ Once the tour is over, we'll head to Monção for a final stroll through the historic centre of this beautiful walled town.
